Effective Listening:
Here are some hints for sharpening your listening abilities:
- Record details: make notes using point form format, use key words, or make
mind maps as you listen.
- Listen for detail
- Organize information
- Listen for key facts and opinions
- Listen for: who, what, when, where, why, how
- Picture the story in your mind.
- When you are able to see the speaker, analyze body language, gestures, intonation.
- Pay attention to inflection and pauses. A speaker may want to stress some
important points by speaking louder or pausing slightly before introducing
a key idea. Repetition of key words should also catch your attention.
- Make associations with key words.
- If you are really struggling with recording on paper, use a tape recorder.
- Prepare organizational structure before you listen. Make a series of questions
that you hope will be answered.
- Focus on the speaker's facial expressions for emphasis of key words and
points.
