Decisions: Action or Apathy>> Career Decisions> Lesson 2> Frame 5

Phone Etiquette
How you sound on the telephone is important and it is something that we don't always think about. Whenever you are communicating whether by letter, email, phone, or in person, you are presenting others with an impression of yourself. A phone call is often the first point of contact you will have to the workplace so it is important to plan your phone calls just as you would any other contact. Remember, a first impression - is a lasting one!

Phone Etiquette Tips

Don't talk too fast.

Speak clearly, pronoucing your words carefully. Speak in your natural voice. Avoid mumbling.

Pay attention to how loud you are speaking. Not too loud - Not too soft.

Don't chew gum, eat or drink while you are talking on the phone.

Don't interupt the person you are talking too, but listen carefully and comment when appropriate.

Avoid using "ums", "uhs", and "ok's"

Give the person you are talking to your attention, don't answer "call waiting" in the middle of a conversation.
